Dear Research Candidate,
The Postgraduate Research Festival is a Divisional event designed to showcase the work of all Higher Degree Research students in the Division of Linguistics and Psychology. This year's Festival is being held on Monday December 8 & Tuesday December 9th, in U@MQ Function Centre (Building C10A) at Macquarie University. The Festival is an opportunity for you to present your research to others in the Division, and to get feedback in a friendly and collaborative environment. With the diversity of research projects in the Division, the Festival is a stimulating forum for both students and staff.
Participation in the Festival is compulsory. On-campus students must make a 15-minute oral presentation (plus 5 minutes for questions). External candidates are welcome to present in person if this is possible; if not presenting, external candidates must submit an e-presentation (a PowerPoint presentation submitted via e-mail). E-presentations will be loaded onto workstations at the Festival venue and will be available for viewing throughout the Festival. Part-time students are required to present as above, but only every two years and you must present in your first year of candidature. Please note that exemptions will only be considered under exceptional circumstances and application for exemption should be through Heads of Departments or Centres. Writing up is not considered an exceptional circumstance. Candidates who do not present at the Festival may be asked to present at a meeting of the Division Higher Degree Research Committee early in 2008. Presentation guidelines including guidelines for e-presentations can be found on the Festival website http://www.lp.mq.edu.au/festival.
All candidates (including external candidates submitting an e-presentation) are required to submit an abstract by completing the online abstract submission form available on the website. You will be asked to indicate whether you will be presenting in person or submitting an e presentation. You will also be asked to nominate your preferred presentation day, and while every effort will be made to accommodate preferences, no guarantees are given. Students are asked to nominate their preferred presentation day when submitting their abstract, however, these requests cannot be guaranteed. Under special circumstances students can request particular time-slots by emailing festival@psy.mq.edu.au; the Festival Committee will consider these requests. The deadline for online submission of abstracts for the Division Research Festival is Sunday 31 August 2008.
The online submission form will be available August 1st, 2008 on the Festival website.
Please note carefully the abstract submission requirements, particularly the word limits for presentation titles and abstracts, and the closing date for submissions. Students who do not submit an abstract by the closing date will be programmed to present in a timeslot allocated by the committee.
The Festival website is being updated for 2008: http://www.lp.mq.edu.au/festival. The Festival website has been designed to assist you with the planning and preparation of your presentation. In addition to guidelines for the preparation of abstracts and presentations, you will also find a PowerPoint template that you may adapt for the Festival. The site also contains links to previous years' Festivals and includes programs and abstracts. The website includes
- Requirements for candidates
- Submission Guidelines (including "preparation of abstracts", "Scope of presentation" according to stages of the research, "Additional tips for E-presentations", "Presenting your presentation", Powerpoint presentation template)
- Submissions (available from 1st August)
- Program
- Accepted Abstracts

- Archives (abstracts and programs from previous Festivals 2003 - 2007) Pre-Festival workshop
To further assist you with your preparation for events such as Festival 2008, a Pre-Festival workshop will be held consisting of three seminars - "Presenting a conference talk: tips & tricks"; "Getting published" and "Building networks for scientific collaborations". The Pre-Festival will he held this year on Wednesday 24th September 2008 from 1:00 - 4:30pm in Price Theatre.
