Dr Britta Biedermann (MACCS) has been awarded a Macquarie University Research Fellowship, a three-year full time position for early-career researchers who have an outstanding track record or who show evidence of qualified excellent research potential.

Dr Biedermann’s area of research relates to brain impairment in the area of language. After a stroke, a person’s ability to store words in their mental dictionary can be affected. Biedermann will look at grammatical errors in the use of singular/plural forms. The outcome will lead to a better diagnosis of language impairment and subsequently to more effective treatment.

Professor Max Coltheart and Associate Professor Amanda Barnier, two very eminent psychologists from the Macquarie Centre for Cognitive Science, accompanied author/neuropsychologist Dr Paul Broks from the University of Plymouth at the Café Scientific in a talk entitled Is your brain who you are?

The free event, hosted by Bernie Hobbs (New Inventors) and Dr Paul Willis (Catalyst) of ABC Science and supported by New Scientist Magazine, took place on Saturday June 2, at the Bangarra Theatre, Walsh Bay.

The three expert panellists debated what it is that gives us a sense of inner self, and what happens when we lose it. We all feel we know who we are - that here, inside my head, is 'me' - yet some scientists argue that no such thing exists and that the 'self' is just a story made up by our brains to help us make sense of ourselves and fellow humans.
